Gut health is a key factor for the health and performance of the athlete. Evidence continues to mount regarding its influence on nutrient absorption, inflammation, immune function, and even muscle function. Stool testing is a valuable tool to assess gut health, the gastrointestinal microbiome, and identify some potential red flags. However, with dozens of stool tests currently available on the commercial market, it’s important to know which are the most useful for identifying treatment targets that can improve gut health. In this presentation, we will review two of the most innovative and well-validated stool tests: the GI Effects and the Microbiomix. A brief overview of each test will be provided, as well as some practical interpretation tips and resources.

Topics covered:

  • Explain why gut health and the microbiome are important for the health and performance of the athlete.

  • Compare and contrast the GI Effects and the Microbiomix stool tests and their advantages over other tests on the market.

  • Apply the results of these tests to design personalized interventions to optimize gut health and athletic performance.
